Expedition > CUBA

Despite being the largest island of the Greater Antilles, Cuba does not have much in common with its neighbours such as Jamaica. Lonely paradise beaches and scarcely developed tourism industry can barely hide the country's economic and political problems.
Many coastal regions are unique landscapes which are only partly declared as nature reserves. The most famous diving region of the island is formed by the extended archipelago "Jardines de la Reina" with countless small mangrove islands off the Cuban south coast, having only recently been made a national park. The special biodiversity of the Jardines - rays, corals, sharks, barracudas - is being diligently preserved, by reducing external disturbances of the sensitive ecosystem. But even outside the Jardines you can find world famous coral formations, i.e. the "Notre Dame" column (6m high) found off the coast of Cienfuegos.
