Expedition > CANARIES

The ALDEBARAN crew has already been very active on the Canaries in recent years. In collaboration with the universities of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Rome, several whale research projects have been conducted south of Tenerife, finally leading to the foundation of a whale reserve.

All islands are of volcanic origin or even part of inactive volcanoes. For example, Tenerife forms the top of a volcanic cone which reaches 3 km down into the sea. The natural force of volcanism determines habitat and environmental conditions on the Canaries, so that this Atlantic "fossil" repeatedly proves its volatility to the residents. There are further research projects about volcanism planned for the future in the shallow waters off the Canaries coast. Despite the often difficult diving conditions such as high waves and strong wind, the water quality, fish population and visibility are generally good.
