deutsche Version

Hamburg, 12th March 2007. „Sinking Paradise“, the current expedition was certified as an official UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development project. The ZDF (German television) will produce several TV-reports on “Sinking Paradise” this spring. ALDEBARAN was among the 66 chosen projects by the UNESCO. The expedition is an example of achieving sustainable development in education through innovative and effective communication. The acknowledgment of the projects will contribute to emphasize on the UN’s intentions and disseminate the ideas all over Germany. ZDF and Deutsche Welle TV will produce documentaries on the current expedition and will broadcast them this summer.

The research and media vessel ALDEBARAN wants to draw attention to the imminent consequences of the climate change, the most drastic one since the last 50 million years. In addition to undertake a research project together with the University of Hamburg, ALDEBARAN will visit projects in the region and will document their efforts and work. ALDEBARAN wants to motivate people to be actively involved in environmentalism. The documentaries will try to support this encouragement.

The overall goal of the ‘United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development’ is to integrate economic, ecological and social values into all aspects of learning to encourage changes in behavior and thinking that allow for a more sustainable development in society and in all areas of the educational system. Sustainable development in education should be made available to everyone. For example, at various live coverage events at the Hamburg planetarium the audience was able to experience first hand what went on at some of the five hundred islands close to the largest barrier reef in the atlantic ocean in Belize.

Soon the Minister of Tourism and the Minister of Environment of Belize are going to visit the crew of the ALDEBARAN on board the ship to discuss emerging projects.

The ‘UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development’ (2005-2014) will encompass thousands of local projects and initiatives. Since the beginning 402 official projects have been certified. In Germany, the German Commission for UNESCO (DUK) and its National Committee are responsible for implementing the goals and searching for the right projects.

Together with various organisations the National Committee has formulated an action plan that contains the essentials goals and schemes for the UN Decade. To successfully implement the concept, one of the important strategies is to support local initiatives and projects. As realized during the world conferences in Rio de Janeiro and Johannisburg sustainability can only be achieved when acting decentralized and directly in local communities.
Local activism is therefore being acknowledge as the main focal point for all the projects. The acknowledgement of the projects. As a result of being recognized, the projects obtain the right to work under the logo of the UN Decade for two years. The national committee will present the acknowledged projects nationally and internationally as Germany’s contribution to the overall concept.
