"Mastering the energy revolution together"

Where            Hamburg City Centre

Venues are located centrally in downtown Hamburg on the Town Hall Square as well as the Europa Passage, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the St Petri’s Church.

 

Aim                 Citizens and decision-makers from politics and business learn on concrete examples and exhibits how innovations and investments can be sustainable and profitable. Many visitors get inspired by eco-friendly products and sustainable ideas. The people’s awareness has to be raised, since every purchase decision is a climate change decision.

 

Measures

 

  • Theme Park: In a climate week theme park on the central Town Hall Square, actors present innovations, products and services for sustainable mobility, energy conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable consumption.
  • Educational programme: Floating green classrooms on Alster steamers for pupils and attractive study trips to companies.
  • Climate finance summit: Well-known actors of the financial industry come together in a climate finance summit to promote sustainable ideas and support a sustainable transformation.
  • Climate Concert: Culture and knowledge are nicely connected in a climate concert and integrated into the topic of the Climate Week.
  • Special events: Opening church service, sustainable banquet in the main church of St Petri’s with excellent chefs and other events under the umbrella of the Hamburg Climate Week.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) the Hamburg Climate Week has evolved into the largest European climate communication event. Furthermore, the Hamburg Climate Week has been decorated as a UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development project. Five successful event weeks, with up to 170 players and a total budget of 1.7 million euros, were attended by more than one million people.

Ocean Competition - Research at sea

From now on pupils from all over Germany enter to participate in a one week cruise aboard research and media vessel ALDEBARAN. To enter the competition you have to be in the 9th grade or above and forward your own research idea.The 2013 Ocean Competition will deal with topics where humankind has already surpassed earth’s natural limits: biological diversity, nitrogen cycle and climate change. A jury of active scientists from renowned institutes, like the Alfred Wegener Institute (Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research) and the German Ocean Museum Stralsund, will nominate the successful candidates. Together with scientists the students will undertake the projects during the summer holidays. The marine competition has been awarded many times and a team from 2012 became the nation-wide winner of the competition “Youth researches” with the topic: Plastic garbage in the sea.

Action day in Lübeck: Experience Biodiversity / GEO-day of Biodiversity

Much discussed but barely recognised: local biological diversity. Because of that we participate in the GEO-day of Diversity from the 31st of May to the 2nd of June in cooperation with science management Lübeck. We call for school classes to apply for the competition “SailingLab Diversity” within the framework of the action days “Experience Biodiversity” in Lübeck:

A sustainable global framework for the oceans

The third and concluding ocean conference of the Dräger foundation will be opened in June by the Portuguese president Anibal António Cavaco Silva and Prince Albert II of Monaco. This shows the vigour with which science, business and politics in Europe and the USA pursue the establishment of a future European Ocean Alliance that aims on a fair distribution and sustainable utilisation of the seas.

Establishment of the German Ocean Foundation on World Ocean Day

Significant preparation has gone into the founding of the German Ocean Foundation on World Ocean day. The aims of the interdisciplinary foundation are: 

 

- supporting the regular exchange between all German stakeholders in the marine field

- advance knowledge of the use and protection of the oceans to the public and to put maritime issues in the public eye in Germany. 

 

A focus, pushed forward through an interdisciplinary collaboration between academia, business, government and society on Germanys role as a leader of innovation in ocean related fields and the firm integration of the topic within the educational sector.

 

A first coordination meeting will take place in the beginning of April at the Federal Press Office in Berlin.

5th Climate Week in Hamburg during August

The 5th climate week will be held form the 12th until the 17th of August in the heart of the city. A theme park at Jungfernstieg from the Thursday the 15th to Saturday the 17th of August could be the highlight of the climate week. Additional evening events are planned in cooperation with HASPA, the chamber of trade as well as other companies and organisations. The media partner will be again the NDR (Northern German Broadcast). Organisers of the 5th Climate Week in Hamburg will be the German workshop for environmentally friendly management (B.A.U.M. e.V.), the largest network of sustainable management in Germany and ALDEBARAN.
